I’m going to try to make this short and sweet. The last thing America needs is government run health care. Why take control of something that the private sector can do better? Because it is costing Americans too much and some people can’t afford it. Oh, then lets figure out how to lower the cost of it. Oh, here is a simple idea, create laws giving doctors better protection from malpractice law suits.
The majority of malpractice suits are frivolous and without grounds. Americans will sue for every ridiculous thing. Remember this is a country where a woman got millions of dollars for spilling hot coffee on herself. When you enter a doctors office you are going in there hoping they can determine what is wrong with you. There is no guarantee on the door saying they will find out what is wrong and they will heal you. Doctors are not magical healers. While we all hope they can help us, it is not guaranteed.
If you go into surgery and something goes unexpectedly wrong, you should have had some speculation that it could happen. The result should not be you suing your doctor. Do you sue an Author when you find a grammatical or spelling error in a book. Do you sue the mailman when he drops off someone else’s mail at your house or your mail at the neighbor’s house? Do you the hotel housekeeper because there was no mint left on your pillow? No, but as soon as Americans realize they might be able to get a lot of money out of a medical law suit, they sue.
In high school I had some pretty bad acne. I went to the doctor and he prescribed some medication to help prevent and stop the acne. It took about a year for us to find the right medication for me, and eventually my face cleared up. Did i sue my doctor for the extra year of my high school life with bad acne because he prescribed the wrong medicine for me? No. I expected that he wasn’t going to give me something magical and that cleared my face overnight, or over a week, or even over a month. I know there are no quick, 100% perfect fixes in the medical world.
My point is that currently doctors pay out the ass for medical malpractice insurance and that drives up the costs of visiting the doctor. President Obama claimed the other night that American doctors will perform tonsilectomys in order to fatten their wallet. Has he ever thought that maybe they perform the tonsilectomys in order to make sure they fix the problem in order to avoid from being wrong.
If we give more protection to the medical profession and allow them to do their job as best they can with the knowledge that they are not magical healers, but normal people trying to do their best at their profession, then we can lower the costs of healthcare and make it more affordable for every American.
